The meaning stories we were raised on have disintegrated before our eyes leaving us with a meaningless world. Understandably, we find that extremely unnerving.

None of the most common convictions of our culture is anything more than a human creation. Not one of them is part of Life’s inherent order.

The lesson asks us to clear our minds of all falsehoods (i.e., of ALL our brainwashed thoughts without exception) and even to make our own the prayer, “Release me, Lord, from all that I now believe.”

Since the Second Inter-Capitalist War, all of our nation’s wars have been fought against the poor. But despite our spending $2 billion per day on preparing for war, “we” haven’t triumphed in a single one since 1945. Our “glorious” troops have been thrashed by farmers, tribal people, mothers, grandparents and children defending their homeland against U.S. imperialism. That’s happened undeniably in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq. When will we ever learn? No one is attacking us.

Shadows on our cave’s wall have established controlling ideas in our minds that determine what we see. Controlling ideas have taught us for instance, that America is the greatest in the world, that it’s a democracy, that its Founders were nearly saintly men, that the policeman is our friend, and that all of us are equal under the law. All those ideas prevent us from looking at our country with new eyes – from seeing it as it “really” is today.

Things upset us, because we lose sight of the only Reality that does not change and that persists eternally as the Background of ever-changing present perceptions.

Lesson 5 invites us to take inventory of persons, things, and events that upset us along with the emotions evoked by those upsets. My upsets are intimately connected with Tuesday’s elections. I feel betrayed by the Democrats. Their failure to follow through on campaign promises offers little reason to vote for them.

Here’s a list of our culture’s completely untrue convictions. They’re taught us by our parents, pedagogues, priests, politicians, publicists, propagandists and philosophers. Which of them do you still believe?
